Let's transform your inspiration into a pattern!

Updated: Mar 27, 2019

I am starting this post off with a few questions because I would really love to hear your thoughts on the subject:

Intimidated when it comes to choosing fabric for your DIY or design projects?

Love that pillow but not the pattern?

How do you personalize your home decor?

Please leave me a comment below and let me know if you have ever asked yourselves one or all of these questions!

In all honesty, I have and that's why I wanted to write this post. A few months ago I walked into a specialized fabric store which sells only to designers. The fabric was beautifully organized throughout the store, the employees were welcoming and very helpful but I still couldn't help but feel like I was way out of my element.

Silk...Tweed... Jacquard... Canvas... Chintz... Denim....wait - what? Did I hear Denim? Phew I know Denim, I wear jeans! That was me, and I am not afraid to admit it. We all need to start somewhere and with everything thrown at us each and every day, it isn't surprising that fabric is the last thing on our mind. And I am not saying it should be the first thing either. Life is made up of priorities, no doubt about that! Life, however, is also made up of little things that when we take the time to notice make everything else worthwhile!

My Interior Design lesson on working with fabrics from The New York Institute of Art and Design is what helped me understand the complex and beautiful world of fabrics. My work in digital fabrication is what led me to fully appreciate the skill required to create such breathtaking patterns. Skill that anyone can learn with willpower and a good teacher!

In the month of May I will be giving a workshop introducing Block Printing. Each participant will learn how to transform their inspiration into a pattern. The workshop is happening at www.fablabast.org. If you would like more details please check out the Fab Labs website. If you have any questions that you would like answered pertaining to fabrics and using them in your design projects, please leave me a comment below!

I don't know how many participants will sign up, for this is my first workshop on fabrics. Either way I will post a follow-up article to this post and answer any questions that come my way via the comments below!

Thank you for visiting !
