How to use a Fab Lab for your next DIY project?
Updated: Mar 27, 2019
This year my parents celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary! 50 years, I just cannot believe how fast time has flown and I am sure they can't either. We decided, as a family, to surprise them with handmade gifts.
Why handmade? Well I proposed the idea, because I knew we could thanks to the fact that we have access to a Fab Lab and also great friends with remarkable talent!
Together with our friends at Atelier Café Cuir we developed a project that combines two luxurious and noble textiles; felt and leather. I knew my mother would love the idea and the outcome would make a great gift! My family agreed and so we got to work!
This collaboration is now part of a series of workshops that we are offering at Fab Lab AST. Participants can sign up and create a case for their tablets or their laptops in felt and leather! Our goal is to highlight how a Fab Lab/Makerspace can teach you to do much more than you ever thought possible, and especially when it comes to fashion design, accessory design and interior design! We are also making the products available for acquiring readymade. We recognize that not everyone can, as of yet, go through the process of making their own, it takes time and commitment. By creating the opportunity for people to purchase the item readymade, we are ensuring that everyone can benefit from having a locally handmade product. Now that being said, I am thrilled to report that our first workshop in August is a hit and we already have a great group of participants ready to take on the challenge!
My mother and father, I can confirm, loved their gifts. What did they get? My mother received a felt and leather case for her iPad! My father received a handmade leather wallet. The iPad case was created in collaboration with our friends at Atelier Café Cuir, and the leather wallet was their creation completely. We just customized it with details I knew my father would love and both items were engraved using the Laser Cutter and Engraver, ensuring a personal and priceless touch! We also made all the cards, envelopes and labels in the Fab Lab, along with a poem written for our parents and engraved on clear acrylic.
The outcome was superb, and it would not have been possible without the collaboration and hard work of our friends at Atelier Café Cuir and without a Fab Lab.
Here are a few pictures of what the final items looked like:
